Growing Up At Work

Beware the Bumbling Boss

It’s never good to be smarter than the boss. If you are, try to keep it hidden.

I learned this truth at almost every one of the 42 jobs I have held in the past, but never more convincingly than when I worked at a DC publishing company’s Internet start-up.

The “boss” decided that what was needed was a daily staff meeting, so every afternoon at 4 PM, we all met in the conference room to discuss our progress. Since nobody had done anything worth mentioning–or anything at all, really– since the meeting held the day before, this proved to be little more than a time-filler.

My repeated refusal to attend these meetings won me few friends in the office. Eventually the boss was fired for his failure to accomplish anything besides holding meetings, but not before I quit.

As a consequence, I have been unemployed for many years, preferring the freelance life. To review my progress, I hold daily meetings in the shower with myself.
